Performances and events during 2013

The orchestra had a productive and enjoyable year in 2013, culminating in their "Spring into Summer" concert at the Regional Art Gallery on 30 Nov. In keeping with the theme of the concert, the orchestra began the evening with Spring themes by Vivaldi, followed by Gershwin's modern classic "Summertime" and a wide variety of music ranging from Bizet's March from Carmen to a selection from "The Wizard of Oz". The orchestra concluded the evening with Mozart's Sleigh Ride, in an arrangement which effectively showcased each section of the orchestra and created a festive spirit as the sleigh bells faded off into the distance at the end of the piece. Guest artists at the concert included flautist Kyla Vine, who delighted the audience with her performance of Chopin's Variations on a theme by Rossini, which resonated beautifully in the wonderful heritage-listed gallery. In addition, a group of ukuleles performed several songs, with the audience singing along enthusiastically. This was the first time that Broken Hill's ukulele groups, the Village Strummers and the Broken Hill Ukulele and Folk Group had formally combined for a performance, following successful performances by each group at the recent Broken Hill Fringe Festival.

Earlier in the year, in May the orchestra hosted a concert for a visiting music travel group. As well as performing a selection from their wide repertoire, the orchestra invited guests Don Mudie and Broken Hill Community Voices to performs some musical items which reflected something of Broken Hill's musical culture and history.

In June, under the baton of conductor Mark Curtis, the orchestra presented a Sunday afternoon concert at historic Wesley Church. Guest artists at this concert were Myles Burt (classical guitar), Robynne Sanderson and Joy Harrison (piano duet) and the Major Minors jazz band who had just returned from a successful performance at the White Cliffs Music Festival.

August was a busy month for the orchestra. On 4th August the orchestra performed as guests at Wesley Uniting Church's 125th Anniversary Celebration Concert. Other guest performers at that concert included the Broken Hill Philharmonic choir and Broken Hill Community Voices choir. On 23 Aug 2013 at the BIU Band Hall in Broken Hill, the orchestra performed in another concert, combining with the Mildura orchestra for several items. Broken Hill's BIU Band also performed at this concert.

In between the various concert performances, the orchestra hosted some movie fundraiser events at the Silver City Cinema, including André Rieu's 2013 Concert in Maastricht which delighted the audience. The fundraiser events were a great financial boost to the orchestra and were made possible by the generosity and wonderful community spirit of John Wren, owner of the Silver City Cinema.

In August the orchestra also took part in a community volunteers expo organised by the Broken Hill City Council. Together with representatives from other local music groups, the orchestra promoted participation in music.

The orchestra is already planning ahead for an exciting year in 2014. From Fri 26 to Sun 28 Sep in 2014, Broken Hill Civic Orchestra will host a weekend of music workshops with Mark Walton, and the weekend will culminate in a concert on Sun afternoon. Mark Walton, who is a patron of Broken Hill's orchestra, is one of Australia's leading clarinet and saxophone teachers and performers. He has worked with the Broken Hill orchestra on many previous occasions, including a workshop and outback concert at Albert Hall in Tibooburra in June 2008.
