Performances and events during 2015
In September 2015, BHCO celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a wonderful concert at historic Wesley Church, in front of a large and appreciative audience.
The occasion was made even more special thanks to several past players who returned to Broken Hill to play with the orchestra for this concert.
Past players who joined us for the concert were Ken Barnett (violin), Leontine Barnett (cello), Tina Rooney (flute), Delwyn Schinella (violin), Franne Sette (double bass), Miluška Šimková (violin), as well as visitors Chantal Balman (clarinet) and Miluška Hofmann (violin).
Earlier in the year, on the weekend of 20-22 March, the Broken Hill orchestra hosted a String Workshop with Louise Keller,Director of Strings at MLC School. The workshop sessions catered for a range of abilities, including a session for beginners, and all orchestra members who attended were very enthusiastic about the workshop. The workshop project was supported by a grant from Regional Arts NSW through the Regional Arts Fund. The workshop was an excellent preparation for the orchestra's first concert of the year, which was held on the following weekend.
The orchestra would also like to acknowledge the generous support of John Wren at the Silver City Cinema for providing us with fundraising opportunities during 2015.
Performances and events during 2014
2014 was an exciting and varied year for the orchestra, with several concerts plus a wonderful opportunity to rehearse with players from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra when they came to Broken Hill to perform a concert in May. The Broken Hill orchestra players who took part in the rehearsal with the SSO found it very inspiring.
In September 2014, musicians of all ages and abilities gathered for an exciting weekend of workshops with Mark Walton, one of Australia's leading clarinet and saxophone teachers and performers. The weekend brought together musicians from three states and even a visitor from the USA, in addition to the local Broken Hill orchestra members. On the Sunday afternoon following the workshop sessions, Mark Walton led the local orchestra... together with over 30 visiting musicians, a choir and one beagle... as they performed music learnt at the workshop, including "Benny the Beagle", an original work by Mark Walton. This project was made possible by a grant from Regional Arts NSW through the Regional Arts Fund.
